Caster Volume 1 – Story, its concept, grip, and impact – 9.5
The story is written by Anirudh Singh
Caster Issue #1 focuses on Danny’s life before becoming caster, his love interest and how the new reality or unknown powers start unfolding in front of him. The concept has just started building so cannot give much score alone here. It is hard to judge or guess the story line in the first issue alone.
Caster Issue #2 focuses on discovery of Danny’s new powers as he tries to protect himself from the demonic souls. Understanding Caster’s law and Danny’s power may create doubts and confusions, but this is just a start.
Caster Issue #3 is where the bigger picture start revealing it. Danny is trapped between life and death and his struggle in-between uncovers the existence of demon, battle between first god and demon and story of humans that nobody knows.
In Caster Issue #4 Danny returns to life and he need someone help to save Nina. This issue introduces 2 more main characters of the caster story line. They are Dr. stone and Suri (the caster, Danny met in first issue). Doctor Stone is an interesting character and so is his hospital.
Caster Issue #5 focuses on Suri, the caster whom Danny met in the first issue. The leviathan has appeared from nowhere and want to take Nina’s soul. Suri has promised to save Nina and thereby started fighting the leviathan. FYI, Leviathan is a mythical creature that has been referenced in the Bible. Can Suri beat a leviathan alone? The answer is not that simple as this issue adds more questions on the table.
Caster Issue #6 Suri and Nina has escaped the Leviathan’s wrath only to fall in the nest of bigger danger. Danny and Doctor Stone knows this and to help them they are standing on the secret door of heaven. Oh my gosh! This is it but I need more!
The story and its concept are nothing like we have ever seen in the Indian comic history. It deserves 10. The story takes time to build momentum thus its grip was not solid in first 2 issues. Yet, the overall impact is so solid that I cannot take off more than .5 score from the Caster Volume 1.
Caster Volume 1 – Cover Art – 9
The covert art in all 6 issues is made by Sir Vivek Goel and coloured by Prasad Pattnaik. The covert art style is different than what we generally see so it may or may not attract you. Yet, it is so rich and tells so much about the caster world that you can point out several things by giving some time in analyzing these covers.
Caster Volume 1 – Lettering and Dialogues – 8
The lettering is excellent as it gives enough space for the artwork, but the dialogues are hard to understand in first read. I had to read the first 3 issues twice to be sure to understand what is going on. There are handful words that I have read for the first time which also confused me whether they are made up words or related to Christianity. However, everything gets clear as you finish reading this saga which will continue with caster Volume 2.
Caster Volume 1 – Inside Art – 10
This is undisputed winner from issue 1 to 6. Holy cow is front runner in Indian comics industry for its artwork and so is Gaurav Shrivastav. All the inside art pictures attached to this post are proof to its score of 10 out of 10.
Caster Volume 1 – verdict
The Caster’s story and its concept are nothing like we have ever seen in the Indian comic history before. Its story and art are an undisputed winner which makes it one of the best reads from Holy Cow.
