Item Dhamaka – GODSMACK #1 – Synopsis
Item Dhamaka series is about two well-known mythological characters who have become part of the modern world. The part 1 was launched 6 years ago in 2014 Hyderabad comic con and yet we read it just a few days back. We wanted to write about item Dhamaka series because we felt so bad that such an awesome concept and fresh ideas by Aayumi productions got forgotten so easily. Aayumi productions actively published 4 comics in first 2 years and were still active on social media until 2018. We hope this review will reach those Indian comic lovers who have not read item Dhamaka so far.
Item Dhamaka, has two central characters and their name are Item and Dhamaka Singh. There is brief introduction of both characters on first page of the book that alone made us excited about the book even before start. Item is Devlok’s apsara Urvashi and Dhamaka Singh is Hiranyaksha son, Prahalad. They both get punished for their individual exercises which got them exiled to earth. Upon reaching earth, Urvashi had no other choice than choosing a profession of a dance bar as that was the only thing that she could do. If you do not know Urvashi had no other skill set as she was cursed by the goddess Saraswathi. While Dhamaka Singh was intellectually so brilliant that he started looking for jobs in multinational companies. He was so smart that he could make Einstein look like a puny. However, he could not be succeeded after trying in more than a dozen companies. The problem was his looks. He was too big and ugly faced to be accepted for these white-collar jobs. Thus frustrated Prahalad end up getting hired by the same dance bar as a bouncer where Urvashi is working as an item girl.
The comic book is a sheer entertainment and a fun ride that you should not miss. All kudos to Shamik Dasgupta to bring out this concept which is a pure talent. Other than the concept, what attracted me most to this book is its artwork, especially Urvashi. This is the first time I have fallen in love for a character. I have become fan of Zoheb Momin for his illustrations of Urvashi. He had really made her look like the most beautiful apsara of the Indralok.
There is an introduction page in the comic book where Dheeraj Verma has appreciated the fresh ideas of the comic book as well and have appealed that this is a kind of work need to be promoted in the industry. There is a part 2 of the book that was released in 2015. The series is still incomplete. But maybe if Item Dhamaka start getting the love it deserved, Pankaj Naik may release the awaiting issues.
Item Dhamaka – GODSMACK #1 – Story – 9.25
Concept – 10
As what Dheeraj Verma said in the introduction of Item Dhamaka, this is kind of ideas what we need in India. By just reading the synopsis of the comic book, we were all in to read complete book in one go.
Pace – 10
The story is short and thus the pace is correct accordingly. You get 24 pages of story and 8 other pages of sketches, team introduction and extra cover.
Grip – 8
After reading synopsis you already know that this is great and that is what is covered in first few pages. But holds you and is most gripping is the mesmerizing beauty of Urvashi. She hooks you to every panel wherever she appears. The short appearances of Indra, hirankshya and hirankashipu also works great in the storyline. However in the mid, the story seemed overstretched as some forgettable guys were given too many scenes.
Impact – 9
We are impressed and may be reason for that could be that we started without high expectations. The story and concept are good, and it deserve a lot of love.
Item Dhamaka – GODSMACK #1 – Dialogues, Letters and Design – 9
Dialogues – 9
They are easy and helps in improving grip of the story.
Caption and speech bubbles – 9
They are placed in correct order. Thus, we did not find difficulty in reading it in hierarchy as well.
Graphic design – 9
No noticeable issue.
Item Dhamaka – GODSMACK #1 – Cover Art – 10
The cover is beautiful. Zohaib momin has worked on it exceptionally well. Both characters look good. The colors are vibrant as well. On the top the characters in motion make it look even better.
Item Dhamaka – GODSMACK #1 – Inside Art – 8
We hardily made it to not to go partial and give it 10 for the inside art. Because we loved Urvashi. If we ever must relate how an apsara should look like, we can say it be the Urvashi in Item Dhamaka. Zoheb Momen, how did you do this? There are some shortcomings though as some of the panels do not appear crisp and clear.
