Operation Decay Volume 1: Ayudh – Synopsis

Operation decay Volume 1 has introduced a new superhero in the holy cow universe and his name is Ayudh. Ayudh is a magician and he has been introduced in the same style as was Desh. We need to wait to know more about Ayudh as volume 1 is more about a story that is going to bring all holy cow characters into one world: fighting for one cause. Volume one has connected some dots from shaitan volume 2 thus it would be exciting to see how other characters going to join the operation decay especially the caster world.

Operation decay volume 1 has introduced many characters that are going to play a key role in the story. One is obviously, Ayudh and the other whom we are going to see in the upcoming volume is Nirek. One thing that we really loved in operation decay is character exploration and development. We expected this from Ashwin Kalmane. He has worked on more than half of a dozen characters so brilliantly that they leave a long-lasting impact on you as much as Ayudh does. Let us talk about what you can expect from Volume 1.

The main super ability of Ayudh is to see and talk to spirits. As far as we know, he is your man for hire if you want to get rid of spirits, hunt ghosts, and deal with other supernatural activities. He was doing fine until he gets shocked by the death of his dear friend. As he started investigating the case, the deeper mysteries start unfolding and appearing such as alien insects from another universe, dragons, gangsters, and covered government operations.

Operation Decay volume 1 has hyped us for the next volumes and volume 1 promises us that this is going to create history in the Indian comics industry.

Operation Decay Volume 1: Ayudh – Story – 9

The story of Ayudh is a bit complicated and can overwhelm you in your first read. But every question and missing dot get solved as you give it a quick second read. We can assure you that the story will put more smiles and a sense of satisfaction as you read it again. The small details that may not make sense in your first read raise your reading experience above average in the second read. There are many questions that remain unanswered till the end especially about the origin of Ayudh. For example, how did he become a magician? Why was he called different than others throughout the story? It is also said that he has no soul. We need to wait further to get these answers.

Pace – 10

The pace of the storyline is perfect. It never seemed over stretched nor too fast. Every event and every scene feel like one step towards the major event.

Grip – 10

The story grips your interest throughout, from the start till the end. In the first few pages, you get to know Ayudh and a short glimpse of what he can do. And then Ayudh discovers that his close friend is dead. The investigation of death made him realized that his friend was part of the bigger mysteries than what he could have think of. In a short time, there is a threat from another universe that is hovering over the world, gangsters who are chasing a dragon god, and a government secret team who are chasing them. You would love every bit of the story.

Impact – 7

The impact of the storyline was average until our first read as the presence of so many characters overpopulated the storyline. But with our second read, our experience gets improved. We said overpopulated because there were over emphasization on a couple of characters that weren’t necessary. These characters were interesting, but their role was too short. This could be a win for the writer and penciler as even these secondary characters were impactful. But left the reader thinking why we got to know a character so much who is not going to make a future appearance.

Operation Decay Volume 1: Ayudh – Dialogue and Letters – 10

Dialogues and letters are perfectly designed and placed. We have already said a couple of times that the language of Indian comics in English should be easy so that it can reach and impress most of the Indian public as most of us are non-native English speakers. Dialogues are simple and they are impactful as well. We are sharing one that we loved most.

Operation Decay Volume 1: Ayudh  – Cover Art – 9

Operation Decay Volume 1 is available in 2 cover variants. One of them is a limited edition which is also approx. Rs 100 costlier than the other.

Standard Cover

We bought both and are happy that we bought, and both look good. But the variant cover is what impressed us more. Yet both have their own advantages. We loved the original cover for its theme and graphical presentation. Whereas the cover variant stands out for its full-page showcase of Ayudh in action. The standard cover has given space for other important characters of the story as well which looks interesting in its own way, but the minute details are missing.

Variant Cover

Cover Standard – 8, Cover Variant – 10

Operation Decay Volume 1: Ayudh  – Inside Art – 8

The inside artwork of Ayudh has been penciled and inked by Harsho Mohan. Harsho Mohan has been part of the holy cow team for a long now and he has proved his excellence in drawing facial expressions a couple of times before. He has his own style which looks nice for a couple of pages like we saw in Aghori bloodlines, but we did not like it much in Shaitan Volume 2. We admit that his art style is not a cup of tea for everyone, but he is impressive in operation decay. Honestly speaking we were afraid and wanted to see Gaurav Shrivastav’s work but Harso Mohan has done a wonderful job. The intensity of the scenes and the character’s emotions are penciled brilliantly. We felt like we are within the world of Operation decay. There is still one thing that we would like to point out. We know, Harsho Mohan is one of the best when it comes to pencil faces but when it is about drawing a full portrait, the lower part of the body looks comparatively shorter. It feels awkward. We are happy that it didn’t bother us much in operation decay as it did in shaitan volume 2.
